Shelby County Lands TVA, Facebook Solar Site

Wednesday, May 19, 2021
The Tennessee Valley Authority on Wednesday announced a new Green Invest partnership with Facebook and RWE Renewables that will build a 150-megawatt solar facility near Millington. Facebook will use 110 megawatts of the solar energy to support their data center operations in Gallatin, Tennessee, and the broader Tennessee Valley.

“Bringing clean energy to Shelby County is part of our long-term community plan, and is critical to support our region’s sustainability strategy,” said Doug Perry, TVA senior vice president, Commercial Energy Solutions. “This project is more than a solar farm, it puts people to work, revitalizes communities and makes our region an environmental leader.”

YNCHBURG, Tenn. (AP) — Iconic whiskey maker Jack Daniel’s has struck a long-term deal to fuel a solar panel farm a few miles from its Tennessee distillery.

The Tennessee Valley Authority says the agreement with the Lynchburg-based distiller, Duck River Electric Membership Corporation and Nashville-based solar power company Silicon Ranch will provide 20 megawatts of solar energy.

Jack Daniel’s Vice President and Assistant General Manager Melvin Keebler says that’s the equivalent of nearly three-quarters of the distillery’s electricity needs.

Vanderbilt commits to first-of-its-kind renewable energy partnership

Vanderbilt University has entered into a pioneering agreement with the Tennessee Valley Authority and Nashville Electric Service to procure off-site large-scale renewable energy to help mitigate the campus’ greenhouse gas emissions. The 20-year agreement will support Vanderbilt’s goal to power its campus entirely through renewable energy and become carbon neutral by the year 2050.

TVA to build state's largest solar site in south central Kentucky

RUSSELLVILLE, Ky. (KT) – The Tennessee Valley Authority announced plans on Thursday to build the largest solar-plus-storage project in its Kentucky service area, which will benefit two well-known companies.

The new Logan County solar farm, part of the TVA’s Green Invest program, will provide Facebook’s regional data center operations with 145 megawatts of solar power and General Motors’ Corvette Plant in Bowling Green with 28 megawatts of solar power.

Facebook’s investment helped enable the addition of 120 megawatt-hours of new battery storage technology which will increase the resilience of the power grid. TVA and Warren Rural Electric Cooperative Corporation are partnering with Nashville-based Silicon Ranch to develop the project.

2020 Solar Champions

At the conclusion of the 2020 Tennessee Valley Solar Conference + Storage on October 7th, TenneSEIA announced its selection of TVA’s Chris Hansen and the Knoxville Utilities Board (KUB) as winners of its 2020 Solar Champion Award. Both recipients were recognized for substantial contributions expanding solar in the region most recently through TVA’s Green Invest program, a renewable energy tariff that enables large customers to access renewable energy from new projects in the Valley.

As TVA’s Vice President of Origination and Renewables, Hansen was credited for his leadership role in the development of TVA’s portfolio of renewable options including the Green Invest program. His work with local power companies (LPCs) has helped them leverage low-cost solar energy to meet customer needs and recruit new business.

Just as Hansen was honored for his role in the development of the Green Invest program, KUB was recognized for participating in the program to secure 212 megawatts of new-to-the-grid solar power for its customers. KUB’s new investment in solar will generate an anticipated 465 million kilowatt-hours per year, an amount equal to approximately 8 percent of KUB’s annual electric load, the equivalent of powering 35,000 average homes.
